Using Colored Candles for Meditation

meditation candlesIn today’s hectic, fast-paced world, more and more people are turning to meditation as a means of relieving stress and anxiety. Defined as a state of calm achieved by channeling energy on a single, restful focus, meditation has been linked to a wide array of benefits, including deeper relaxation, an enhanced immune system, improved circulation and blood pressure, and alleviation of pain from headaches and other medical conditions. Whether you’re suffering from a chronic illness or just feeling overwhelmed by a sink full of dirty dishes, meditation can help to detract your focus from the source of the anxiety.

There are many different methods of meditation used today, including yoga, breathing techniques, meditative music, and the chanting of mantras. Whatever type of meditation practice you choose, candles can serve as a highly effective and simple accessory for relaxation. Candles are a cost-effective way to add instant ambiance to your meditation space. Try turning off all artificial lighting and using only the illumination from the candles. The soft, flickering flame will help you to achieve a centered, tranquil state of mind, and can even be used as the focal point during meditation. By using scented candles, you can pair your meditation techniques with the widely acknowledged benefits of aromatherapy.

Altru Soy Candles

Your sister-in-law rivals Angelina Jolie in her humanitarian efforts.

She uses her vacation time to donate shoes to orphans in Guam, spends weekends learning Cantonese for her next international volunteer mission and says she doesn’t need anything this year but life’s necessities. Relieve the guilt (for both of you) by choosing a present from Altru, a company that contributes to the nonprofit In a Perfect World.

Invocative of faraway lands and exotic locales, Altru’s soy candles are named for attributes one would find in a “perfect world” - i.e., harmony, integrity and wellness. The rich designs and hammered copper votive make for an impressive presentation.

Your selfless relative can enjoy soothing candlelit fragrances from the Persian lilac candle and white freesia candle, knowing her much-deserved relaxation helps to empower the globe’s children even when she can’t.

Candle Club keeps flame bright

The interior of the supper club is dim, though.

BY DENISE NEIL

The Wichita Eagle

Part of what makes the Candle Club the Candle Club is that its owner rarely agrees to talk about it in the media.

He doesn’t advertise the club, and he doesn’t actively recruit members.

Instead, owner Louis Thompson allows the Candle Club - a mysterious, throw-back supper club with carpet on the walls and no identifying sign on the building - to grow organically, building on a reputation developed during 50 years of business.

Another useful trend indicator

Vinod Sharma / Mumbai September 27, 2009, 0:38 IST

Japanese have used it to spot movements on a trend

A Harami is a candlestick indicator which marks the reversal or sidewise movement of an existing trend. The Japanese word Harami means pregnant and the indicator is sometime known as a pregnant candle. Harami candles are found on daily charts and may be found both at the end of bullish and bearish trends. They are easy to identify and mostly favour swing traders.

The Harami pattern is made up of two candlesticks. The first has a large body and the second a small body totally encompassed by the first. There are four possible combinations: white/white, white/black, black/white and black/black. Whether a bullish reversal or bearish reversal pattern, all harami look the same. Their bullish or bearish nature depends on the preceding trend. Harami are considered potential bearish reversals after an advance, and potential bullish reversals after a decline. No matter what the colour of the first candlestick, the smaller the body of the second candlestick, the more likely the reversal. If the small candlestick is a Doji, the chances of a reversal increase.

Harami candlesticks are not considered among the most reliable indicators. But they are useful…

The other festival of lights

We know that Deepavali is known as the Festival of Lights, and is celebrated every year around October or November by the Indian community. The Chinese celebrate another kind of festival of lights - well, lanterns actually. It’s the season for mooncakes and lanterns and there’s no better place for a light-up than in Chinatown. Chinatownboy writes about the street light-up in Chinatown and reflects how the celebration has changed today.

What’s changed today? Chinatownboy writes:

And what happened to the lanterns that each kid would clamour for? Those tied together using bamboo chicks and covered by transparent coloured “glass” papers. In the centre was a small metal spring, into which one would put in a small candle. It was a challenge to keep the lanterns from catching fire. Then came the advent of battery operated lamps and plastic lanterns in the shape of Ultra-man. What would have been beautifully hung along the five-foot-ways outside the shops in Chinatown, they are conspiciously absent. The shops have changed. The children too.

If you think this season is just about mooncakes and pretty lights, perhaps it’s time to do some reading up about the Mid-autumn Festival and learn about why the Chinese celebrate this festival.

Paper lanterns are great things to use outdoors, such as in the backyard or in the garden. It is too bad that, in humid areas, mosquitoes can ruin such lovely places. Bug spray only works so well; it stinks, and it makes your skin and eyes burn. Let us take a look at another option.

You can use paper lanterns to repel mosquitoes. All you have to do is buy a mosquito repellent candle and place it in your flame-lit paper lantern. You can buy these candles in many different stores, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes; they have different ranges of effectiveness, usually anywhere from five to fifteen feet.
