Candle Club keeps flame bright

The interior of the supper club is dim, though.

BY DENISE NEIL

The Wichita Eagle

Part of what makes the Candle Club the Candle Club is that its owner rarely agrees to talk about it in the media.

He doesn’t advertise the club, and he doesn’t actively recruit members.

Instead, owner Louis Thompson allows the Candle Club - a mysterious, throw-back supper club with carpet on the walls and no identifying sign on the building - to grow organically, building on a reputation developed during 50 years of business.

A Little History and Information About Chandeliers

The history of the chandelier begins hundreds of years ago. That first design was used in places of assembly and gathering. Places like churches and local bars or other places where many would gather. The original looking chandelier was in the shape of a cross or ‘X’ with places for the candles to go. Then, this whole unit could be cranked or lifted up to the desired height and locked until the candles needed to be replaced or extinguished.

This design was the primary way that they were built for many years. More ornate chandllier designs and elements that made them more elegant were added to help distinguish the wealthy from the rest of the population. Since having candle light in the evening or at night could be viewed as a luxury, only the wealthy typically had chandeliers in their homes. Over time, cut glass and crystals would be used to adorn these wooden chandeliers or hand forged wrought iron chandelier designs into beautiful creations.

Then, in about the fifteenth century, more modern glass making and metal casting became simpler and more understood. Modern glass making added in the element of leaded glass. These crystal chandeliers gave a wonderful sparkle and ray pattern to the light, as well as overall design. With this more manufactured style of production, it was more affordable and more accessible to the middle class. When the source of energy for lighting these chandeliers moved to a gas powered style, there were even more changes made. This shift towards the availability of gas happened during the middle of the nineteenth century. With this came more fanciful designs and branching patterns that were not restricted simply by the candle size and placement.

Today, you can find a variety of indoor and outdoor chandeliers for a myriad of applications. With many designs, there are plans for a chandelier in several rooms of the home. In the past, a chandelier might hang in a formal dining or reception area. This would be a classically larger style and hang well above the floor. In recent interior design trends, mini chandeliers are showing up in places like bathrooms, closets and even young girls’ rooms. You will be amazed at how the history of chandeliers has evolved into what it is today.

candelabra

While many people use the term “candelabrum,” not as many people could accurately describe the characteristics that make an objects qualify as such. To that end, a candelabrum can typically be understood as a large and decorative candlestick. They are most often constructed in the shape of a pedestal or column with several branches or arms, wherein candles are meant to be displayed.

The plural of this object is the candelabra, which is actually probably an even more familiar term. Arguably the best known version of this device is the specialized Jewish menorah. With the advent of electricity, however, these devices aren’t strictly necessary, but they are generally used in a decorative or traditional sense.

With so many choices of home decor to choose from, the most important factor is making yourself comfortable and happy. Of course it’s important to you to have an attractive and inviting home for your friends and visitors, but you’re the one who matters most. After all, you do live there!

Color is a very important factor when choosing your home decor. Rich hues such as burgundy, navy, green and rustic colors tend to make a home feel warm and cozy, while lighter shades create an open and airy atmosphere. Red, black and gold as commonly used in Asian home decor is very bold and perfect for those with strong personalities who want their home to make a statement.

Country home decor and well as western styles use alot of the rich and rustic colors. Roosters, cowboy wall hangings, wooden western mirrors and candleholders all tend to have these shades in them. These warm hues are also frequently used in western style rugs, country kitchen towels, curtains and canisters.

Light and airy colors are also used in shabby chic decor. There are several styles of shabby chic, but most use light colored furniture and accents with a distressed or worn finish. Delicate floral patterns are used in curtains and wall hangings, along with elegant distressed finish chandeliers, candle holders, plant stands and mirrors. The shabby chic look is romantic and charming.

Of course, whatever you feel comfortable with is fine. If an eclectic mixture of these styles is what you like, go for it! I have seen homes where each corner of the room had its own theme - nautical in one corner, porcelain dolls in another, with an overall country theme. It was absolutely breath-taking! So when it comes down to it, use whatever style of home decor makes you happy. Your guests will love it too.
