Using Colored Candles for Meditation

meditation candlesIn today’s hectic, fast-paced world, more and more people are turning to meditation as a means of relieving stress and anxiety. Defined as a state of calm achieved by channeling energy on a single, restful focus, meditation has been linked to a wide array of benefits, including deeper relaxation, an enhanced immune system, improved circulation and blood pressure, and alleviation of pain from headaches and other medical conditions. Whether you’re suffering from a chronic illness or just feeling overwhelmed by a sink full of dirty dishes, meditation can help to detract your focus from the source of the anxiety.

There are many different methods of meditation used today, including yoga, breathing techniques, meditative music, and the chanting of mantras. Whatever type of meditation practice you choose, candles can serve as a highly effective and simple accessory for relaxation. Candles are a cost-effective way to add instant ambiance to your meditation space. Try turning off all artificial lighting and using only the illumination from the candles. The soft, flickering flame will help you to achieve a centered, tranquil state of mind, and can even be used as the focal point during meditation. By using scented candles, you can pair your meditation techniques with the widely acknowledged benefits of aromatherapy.

Candle Club keeps flame bright

The interior of the supper club is dim, though.

BY DENISE NEIL

The Wichita Eagle

Part of what makes the Candle Club the Candle Club is that its owner rarely agrees to talk about it in the media.

He doesn’t advertise the club, and he doesn’t actively recruit members.

Instead, owner Louis Thompson allows the Candle Club - a mysterious, throw-back supper club with carpet on the walls and no identifying sign on the building - to grow organically, building on a reputation developed during 50 years of business.

Candle Holders:

Candle holders aren’t just for holding candles anymore. They’ve become exciting decorative fixtures that not only accentuate a candle but the interior décor of many homes as well. They can function as they are intended or used as an art piece entirely on their own, especially as centerpieces. You can find them in any number of styles, shapes, designs and themes. With so many varied functions of candles these days it only makes sense that candle holders would be right there alongside them in functionality and demand.

When decorating your home they can be used to complement your style when they are applied to empty spaces. Place a candle holder to create a focal point or to add the perfect accent on an area that lacks in décor. They make perfect accents for mantelpieces. They can be ornately designed or made to have the minimalist in mind.

Gold Edged Hurricane Lamps

Gold Edged Hurricane Lamps

I like the idea of accessories that pull double duty.  A personal favorite in my home are my Hurricane Lamps.  Sure, they make it possible to eat outdoors on a breezy night, but they can serve many other useful purposes.  So, today I would like to share some of my favorite tips for Hurricane Lamps as well as ways you can use them to spruce up your home for any holiday or as an accessory all year long.

The Hurricane Glass Bowl is a nice option. The low height makes it easy to see people sitting across the table. I would fill it with water and aqua candles.

The Londoner Hurricane is a cool modern option. It looks great with some simple ornaments inside or out.

Some Tips on Accessorizing your Hurricane Lamps:
■Fill them with Pine Cones for your Mountain Retreat or Sea Shells in your Beach House.
■Put sea salt in the bottom with some holly on top for the look of fresh snow.  Finish it off with a large pillar candle.
■Fill them with colored or clear marbles for a modern look.
■Arrange seasonal fruits and veggies: Lemons, pomegranates, green apples, artichokes and gourds look great.
■Decorate around the hurricane with greenery, flowers or garland.
If you do want to use candles, stock up on different colors so you can coordinate the color with linens.  Just remember that these beautiful accessories can be used as a showcase for anything special; no candle is required.  With a little imagination your table will always look fresh and fun.

300m Tall 1Malaysia Lantern Unique Attraction At Festival

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (Bernama) — The KL Lantern Festival 2009, to be held here on Saturday night, will feature a 300-metre tall lantern shaped in the 1Malaysia logo as part of the event’s unique attraction.

The festival’s advertising and promotions manager, Mak Soon Peng, told Bernama that the lantern festival, the fourth in its series, expects around 10,000 visitors from around the country.

“Participation from our multiracial community will complete the 1Malaysia concept which is also the lantern festival’s theme for this year,” he said.

Mak said religious and cultural differences should not pose a barrier to Malaysians to celebrate the festival.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is expected to launch the event at the Central Market where participants would carry their lanterns to the Kotaraya shopping complex before heading back to the Central Market.

Benjamin Franklin, Candle Maker. Who Knew???

Make a candle at Franklin event on Wednesday
While Benjamin Franklin may well be remembered as a philanthropist, scientist, humorist, philosopher, entrepreneur and diplomat, his work as a candle maker may be less well known.

The Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World exhibit continues at Urbana University’s Student Center until Oct. 7. On Wednesday, Sept. 16, exhibit visitors will have an opportunity to make a small candle thanks to the Candlemoms. The Candlemoms will be at the exhibit from 2 to 7 p.m. to explain the modern candle making process to exhibit visitors. The Student Center is located at 579 College Way, Urbana.

Franklin’s father was a candle-maker. Ben Franklin learned the art of candle-making at a young age, but never liked it. At the age of 10, Franklin started working as an apprentice chandler, or candle-maker, with his father. He found wick cutting and tallow dipping tedious business and by age 12 left the candle shop to become a printer’s apprentice to his brother James.

During Franklin’s lifetime, candles were generally dipped or molded. Often, multiple dipping rods were used, each with a dozen wicks tied to them. The wicks were repeatedly dipped into melted tallow floating in vessels of warm water. The size of the candles was determined by the length of wick and the number of dips.

During the Sept. 16 demonstration at the exhibit, visitors will be able to make a tea candle to take with them using the soy wax and fragrances available from The Candlemoms. Larger candles and supplies will be available for purchase.

The Candlemoms, Dianna Fielder and her daughter, Natalie Fielder, started making and selling their All Natural 100 percent Soy Candles in January. Soy wax is believed to be healthier than tallow or paraffin wax; its wax burns longer and cleaner than paraffin.

Dianna said, “We teach people how to make candles. Candles can be a gift from the heart.” As people choose the colors or fragrances they like best, each candle is a unique creation.

“Candles are a nice homemade gift for people,” she said. The Candlemoms enjoy teaching people how to make candles as well as sell the supplies for future candle-making. To contact the Candlemoms, call 652-3041 or email thecandlemoms@yahoo.com.

Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World, is a free exhibit open weekends noon-4 p.m. and Mondays-Thursdays 2-7 p.m. through Oct. 7. For information, call 484-1357 or email benfranklin@urbana.edu.
