Candle Club keeps flame bright

The interior of the supper club is dim, though.

BY DENISE NEIL

The Wichita Eagle

Part of what makes the Candle Club the Candle Club is that its owner rarely agrees to talk about it in the media.

He doesn’t advertise the club, and he doesn’t actively recruit members.

Instead, owner Louis Thompson allows the Candle Club - a mysterious, throw-back supper club with carpet on the walls and no identifying sign on the building - to grow organically, building on a reputation developed during 50 years of business.

Praying to the ‘Continuance God’ … can a San Antonio lawyer get a break?

September 10, 2:08 AMSan Antonio Community ExaminerAdolfo Pesquera velas, prayer candle, lawyer humor
The Honorable Judge of Perpetual Continuances

A lawyer friend of mine was so not looking forward to a court hearing tomorrow that she made the remark, “I’m praying to the Continuance God, so I won’t have to proceed with that case.”

And to this, her mother remarked that she should light a candle.

The lawyer mother’s immediate afterthought was, “I wonder if there is a Continuance Candle?”

But since this is San Antonio and these are Hispanic Catholics, what she really said was, “Crees que hay vela para eso?”

The ‘vela’ (candle) takes on a special cultural significance here, as anyone who stumbles into the candle section at a La Fiesta supermarket can attest.

That can be an eerie out-of-body moment to the uninitiated.

We have candles for Good Luck with a pair of dice painted on the glass cylinder. There are candles of the Archangel Michael to protect us from harm.

There are Love candles to attract a mate, and Good Health candles to ward off sickness.

There is a cottage industry that improvises whatever abiding interest the candlemaker thinks might sell cases of wax in glass jars.

We have candles for Homies - dead Homies and live Homies. I’m not sure what that’s about, but I suspect it’s for people who pray for those in purgatory, whether in this world or the next.

It’s a wonder that we don’t have Hanna Montana candles. Knock on wood.

But there are no Continuance candles, yet. So I created one, at least in Illustrator. What do you think?

Here is the perfect Continuance Judge, wearing a sombrero, holding a margarita glass in his hand, presiding over Manana Court.

I christen him The Honorable Judge of Perpetual Continuances. May he grant thee favors.

Just bring the margaritas.

Lighting Up the Mood - Making Candles Work Outdoors

Outdoor lighting is something that greatly enhances the atmosphere of any outdoor event, and can even be made more effective with candles. A few candles can make a night time party or a simple get-together more atmospheric, more welcoming and more exotic for you and your friends. And believe it that candles make all the difference when you are planning a romantic night with your special someone.

However, you first need to make these candles work outdoors, and you have a range of options at your disposal: whether you use wall mounted sconces for more permanent candle holders or simple battery candles for a

quicker solution, you can make sure to bring the atmospheric effect of candles to the great outdoors.

Mounted Candle Sconces
There are specially-designed sconces for candles that are mounted on the walls. These sconces have the advantage of holding up candles with minimal risk of getting knocked over or getting in the way. That and they hold up the candles to give a pretty good range of soft illumination.

A simple note, though: make sure your mounted candle sconces have glass or plastic covers with them. A slight gust of wind would be more than enough to knock out a candle that is exposed to the elements, thus making candle covers essential for any candle.

Candle Hurricanes
Candle hurricanes provide an excellent outdoor table-top solution to your candle light needs. Clear glass, a beautiful yet simple design, and a stable stand all work together to provide a reliable candle holder that can be easily placed outdoors.

Hurricane lanterns are particularly effective for grand outdoor events, like parties or weddings that have many tables or surfaces for guests to use. Placing one hurricane lantern in the center of such tables allows for a unique and effective method of providing the soft glow of a candle to each table, while making them safe and usable even while outdoors.

Candle Lanterns
These candle lanterns are exceptional works of art in themselves: intricately drawn or painted figures around paper, plastic or light glass provide a uniquely artistic touch to a candle holder.

In addition to this unique nature, candle lanterns are also versatile little things: they can be hung from a protrusion from the wall, from a pole stuck to the ground, or even just placed on top of a flat surface to provide outdoor lighting. This makes them ideal for outdoor locations that do not have many surfaces or areas to place a few candles.

A Little History and Information About Chandeliers

The history of the chandelier begins hundreds of years ago. That first design was used in places of assembly and gathering. Places like churches and local bars or other places where many would gather. The original looking chandelier was in the shape of a cross or ‘X’ with places for the candles to go. Then, this whole unit could be cranked or lifted up to the desired height and locked until the candles needed to be replaced or extinguished.

This design was the primary way that they were built for many years. More ornate chandllier designs and elements that made them more elegant were added to help distinguish the wealthy from the rest of the population. Since having candle light in the evening or at night could be viewed as a luxury, only the wealthy typically had chandeliers in their homes. Over time, cut glass and crystals would be used to adorn these wooden chandeliers or hand forged wrought iron chandelier designs into beautiful creations.

Then, in about the fifteenth century, more modern glass making and metal casting became simpler and more understood. Modern glass making added in the element of leaded glass. These crystal chandeliers gave a wonderful sparkle and ray pattern to the light, as well as overall design. With this more manufactured style of production, it was more affordable and more accessible to the middle class. When the source of energy for lighting these chandeliers moved to a gas powered style, there were even more changes made. This shift towards the availability of gas happened during the middle of the nineteenth century. With this came more fanciful designs and branching patterns that were not restricted simply by the candle size and placement.

Today, you can find a variety of indoor and outdoor chandeliers for a myriad of applications. With many designs, there are plans for a chandelier in several rooms of the home. In the past, a chandelier might hang in a formal dining or reception area. This would be a classically larger style and hang well above the floor. In recent interior design trends, mini chandeliers are showing up in places like bathrooms, closets and even young girls’ rooms. You will be amazed at how the history of chandeliers has evolved into what it is today.
