Candle Holders - A Study of Flame and Light

A candle holder is a strange home accessory. It is designed to be a container for fire, a place to store and display the illumination of flames, through the holding of candles. This means that when you choose to purchase a candle holder you can’t look at it in the void. You have to be attentive to its relationship to the flame, to light, even to heat, and the way all of these factors will affect the roWrought Iron & Glass Candle Holdersom where they are placed.

The first thing you should contemplate is how the light from the candle will fall on the holder itself. Some materials such as glass or crystal will refract the light, glowing under its gentle ministrations. Other materials are opaque, and will absorb the light of the flame. These include certain types of hardwood, slate, or bone.

Another thing to consider is how the candle holder will fit in with the rest of the space. Does it match the room it is being placed into in style and color? Does it clash with the existing elements in the room? Does it look out of place?

You should also consider the way shadow will fall on the space. When a candle flickers it will cast a glow. In the absence of this glow, shadows will be created. These shadows can be warm companions to the space, or evil demons that lurk over everything. However it is difficult to plan for the way shadows will fall, until you have actually placed a candle in the space.

Another aspect of candle holder decorating is that it can be quite romantic. The soft ambient glow can cast a subtle light on a space, which can create an intimate atmosphere that is quite romantic.

Decorating with candle holders is about not only the way the piece will actually look in the space, but is also about how it will look when a candle rests in its crown. It is important to take all of this into consideration when choosing a piece for the home.

Candle Burning Tips to get the Most out of Your Burning Candles

Candles help create a warm and inviting atmosphere in many homes, offices, and even some four star hotel suites. Candles are a joy to burn, and many families use the lighting of the candles in their homes as an end of the work/school day ritual. For these families the lighting of the candle symbolizes the beginning of their time together for the day and a time to forget the stress and the hassle from work or school.

Few things make a home as cozy as a burning candle, and even fewer things can make a home smell as wonderful as scented candles. Whether you are burning a Juicy Apple jar candle, an Evening Mocha cake candle, or any of our other great candles, there are several things you should consider when lighting the candle to ensure it is a safe and enjoyable experience.

Gold Edge Hurricane Lamps

Gold Edge Hurricane Lamps

First things first. Be sure to place your candle (even jar candles) on a heat resistant surface, such as a metal candle pan, away from curtains, gas stoves, and other flammable materials. Don’t burn your candles as “stand alones”. Use a carefully chosen candle holder such as a  candle lamp or  a candle lantern. It is highly recommended that you place your candles and candle holders where pets and children cannot be hurt by them or knock them over. Try to keep your candles and candle holders away from opening and closing doors and ceiling fans because a draft can cause your candle to burn unevenly and inefficiently. Hurricane lamps are aptly named. Use a glass skirted candle holder, like a hurricane lamp in drafty or slightly breezy conditions.

If you are burning a jar candle that came with a lid do not use the lid to snuff out the candle. The lids are primarily decorative and are not made to withstand the heat of a burning candle. It is always best to gently blow out your candles; just don’t blow too hard and splatter the melted wax!

The most important thing to remember when burning a candle is to use common sense. If you think it isn’t in a safe spot, move it. If you don’t think you’ll remember to blow it out, leave yourself a note by your bed. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and always remember safety first.

Votive candle lamps are a lot like long cups and you can use them both indoors and outdoors. These are available in unique designs and are suitable for those long candles. A new trend are spiked candle holders where you will see a flat base with a spike on which you fix the candle. This prevents the candle from getting dislodged.

Tealight candle lamps are the tiny, versitile lights used as groups to give a soft glow. The tealight candle holder holds the candle safely while it shines. They make beautiful centerpieces, together or individually.

One of the most beautiful candle lanterns is the Moroccan candle lanterns, which are exotic looking lanterns. Some of the brand new lanterns are even made to look aged for an antique look. Intricate bronze metalwork makes these lanterns look charming even if you do not light them. They make interesting conversation pieces when you place them on your patio or deck when you have a barbecue grilling party or at the poolside, or by your hot tub.

For the outdoors, hurricane candle holders can keep your flame intact on a breezy day during any season, whether it is winter or summer. Exquisitely designed glass candle lanterns can transform the atmosphere of your patio or deck. Many lighting stores feature unique candle lamps. You might like to go in for some scented candles  that will fill your living space with fragrance, complementing the candle lamp.

Whatever the design, style or cost, you need candle holders and candle lamps to burn your candles safely.

The history of the chandelier begins hundreds of years ago. That first design was used in places of assembly and gathering. Places like churches and local bars or other places where many would gather. The original looking chandelier was in the shape of a cross or ‘X’ with places for the candles to go. Then, this whole unit could be cranked or lifted up to the desired height and locked until the candles needed to be replaced or extinguished.

This design was the primary way that they were built for many years. More ornate chandllier designs and elements that made them more elegant were added to help distinguish the wealthy from the rest of the population. Since having candle light in the evening or at night could be viewed as a luxury, only the wealthy typically had chandeliers in their homes. Over time, cut glass and crystals would be used to adorn these wooden chandeliers or hand forged wrought iron chandelier designs into beautiful creations.

Then, in about the fifteenth century, more modern glass making and metal casting became simpler and more understood. Modern glass making added in the element of leaded glass. These crystal chandeliers gave a wonderful sparkle and ray pattern to the light, as well as overall design. With this more manufactured style of production, it was more affordable and more accessible to the middle class. When the source of energy for lighting these chandeliers moved to a gas powered style, there were even more changes made. This shift towards the availability of gas happened during the middle of the nineteenth century. With this came more fanciful designs and branching patterns that were not restricted simply by the candle size and placement.

Today, you can find a variety of indoor and outdoor chandeliers for a myriad of applications. With many designs, there are plans for a chandelier in several rooms of the home. In the past, a chandelier might hang in a formal dining or reception area. This would be a classically larger style and hang well above the floor. In recent interior design trends, mini chandeliers are showing up in places like bathrooms, closets and even young girls’ rooms. You will be amazed at how the history of chandeliers has evolved into what it is today.

Candles have been used as decorative pieces for a long time now; candles go beyond being static accessories as lighting them up gives such a dynamic effect. Candles can be a great lighting alternative especially for places where not a lot of light is needed. Places like porches or lounges can be great places to put candles on because these are places where not a lot of light required activities are done. Candles are also great for outdoor living spaces since it can draw insects like mosquitoes to its flames making it safe for people especially children to enjoy the outdoors.

Candles are also great bedroom accessories as it can help people relax. Scented candles usually in tea light form are very abundant in spa and bath houses lining the sides of hot tubs and Jacuzzis even massage rooms.

Candles are not difficult to maintain, when the wax is used up one can just discard it. Perhaps the most difficult part of maintaining candles if it could really be considered difficult is cutting the burnt parts of the wick. The darkest or burnt part of the wick should be cut to keep the flame small and to keep the wax from being consumed too fast. Aside from cutting the wick the all one needs to do is wipe dust from the candle so it always looks clean and neat.
